Verve

Fiber Content: 100% Superwash Merino Wool
Weight: Fingering
Care: May be machine washed in cool water, but for best results all hand knits should be hand washed

*NOTE: a few years ago we changed the Verve base yarn slightly. The new yarn has a bit less twist. We originally had it “over spun” with a very high twist because we designed it as a sock yarn. Now that most of our customers use it for shawl knitting, that extra twist isn’t necessary. We’ve also switched mills to a mill that produces more consistently high quality yarns. The new Verve (labels will say “Verve 2”) looks very similar to the original Verve but without the sections of “twisted spaghetti” that would often happen. It takes dye the same and works up to the same gauge. We still have a bit of the original Verve in stock and will hold on to it for anyone needing more yarn to complete a project started in original Verve. Just let us know in the comments when you order if that is what you need.  (updated 9/19/18)

100% Superwash merino with a tight twist, Verve works well for shawls or other lacey projects because it has good stitch definition and takes color well.

Sushi Socks

Limited Availability

Fiber Content: 60% Superwash Merino, 30% Bamboo, 10% Nylon
Fingering Weight
Care: May be machine washed in cool water, but for best results all hand knits should be hand washed

Sushi Socks looks a lot thicker than your average fingering weight because its VERY smooshy, but its compresses a lot as you knit. Bamboo is a strong fiber when dry but is delicate when wet, so for best results handwash and allow to air dry rather than putting through the washing/drying machines.

Because of the cellulose (plant) content, Sushi Socks doesn’t take colors as boldly as some of our other base yarns. It has a soft shimmer and a nice bounce, but not much stitch definition. This is one of our softest yarns and is excellent for people with delicate skin or whenever you need a soft snuggle!

Green Sheep Fingering

Limited Availability

Fiber Content: 100% Organic superfine merino
Fingering Weight
Care: Handwash

This yarn is one of the softest wools I’ve ever had my hands on. It is light as a cloud and is perfect for lace or fairisle. I can’t stop working with it! Even though its fingering weight, we don’t recommend using it for socks because it is a very soft wool with a light twist and therefore isn’t as durable as yarns spun with socks in mind. Instead use this for lacey shawls, light weight cardigans and huggable baby items!

Because it hasn’t been superwash treated, Green Sheep Fingering tends to take dye unevenly with more blending on the skein. This adds a lot of “life” to the color and fabric as you knit. There is a trade-off to using this superfine, super soft fiber- over time the stitches do start to blur and fuzz, especially if treated roughly. That makes this yarn best for something where the focus doesn’t need to be on intricate stitch patterning or for pieces that will be handled delicately.

Tinsel Toes

Discontinued

Fiber Content: 50% Superwash Merino, 50% Tencel
Fingering Weight
Care: May be machine washed in cool water, but for best results all hand knits should be hand washed

Tinsel Toes pills less than any other yarn I’ve ever put on my feet. I have a pair of socks that I have worn a billion times and run through the washer and dryer with my regular laundry and still can’t get them to pill! Tinsel Toes shows off complicated stitch patterns very well because of the non-pill factor and because it’s a smooth, shiny yarn.

When used for lacey shawls, Tinsel Toes has excellent stitch definition and blocks like iron. We carry shawl samples in Tinsel Toes to shows and they just keep looking like the day they came off the blocking board.

When dyed in bright colors, Tinsel Toes sometimes comes out a bit more muted than other bases. We also see more blending of colors on the skein with Tinsel Toes which makes it harder to get crisp, bright contrasts with this yarn.

Warning: We have received reports from a few customers that Tinsel Toes in dark or very concentrated colorways can bleed a bit. This is due to the tencel component which “stains” rather than actually absorbing the dye. This does not seem to be a problem with most colorways, only those that we have to really drench with dry in order to get an especially dark color- for example anything with black or deep red as a main colorway.

Luxe

Discontinued

UPDATE: We have found a wonderful replacement and its EVEN BETTER than the original Luxe. We are calling it Diamond Luxe. Order it here!

Unfortunately due to production issues at the mill, we are no longer able to offer Luxe. Verve is very similar with an almost identical twist, drape, and weight. The only difference is the small amount of sheen the silk gave to Luxe. We will be adding a new tussah silk/merino blend fingering weight to the collection soon!

Fiber Content: 25% Tussah Silk, 75% Superwash Merino
Fingering Weight
Care: May be machine washed in cool water, but for best results all hand knits should be hand washed

This yarn is much like Verve, but not quite as highly twisted. The 25% Tussah Silk adds a nice bit of luster without being shiney. This yarn is made just for The Unique Sheep and has become a favorite among our shawl knitters. We love this yarn for knitting lace patterns because it has a beautiful drape, excellent stitch definition and it blocks well.

Due to the Tussah Silk content, this yarn naturally has small “slubs” of silk, giving it a bit of texture and interest. This is not a defect in the yarn. The slubs are small and infrequent and should not cause problems with gauge or with using beads.

Marici Fingering

Limited Availability

Fiber Content: 100% Spun Silk

Fingering Weight
Care Instructions: Handwash

This luxurious silk yarn is named after the Buddhist goddess of light, Marici (pronounced Mar-ee-shi). This yarn has the same fiber content and twist as our Marici Lace, and the same great shine and drape, but is heavy enough for your fingering weight wraps, tops and scarves.

Pashmi

Fiber Content: 80/10/10 Superwash Merino, Cashmere and Nylon
Fingering Weight
Care Instructions: Handwash Only

A little bit of cashmere adds a LOT of softness to Pashmi. This yarn just soaks dye up, making it ideal for bold colors.

GS Cotton Bamboo Fingering

Limited Availability

Fiber Content: 51% combed organic cotton, 49% bamboo rayon
Fingering Weight
Care: May be machine washed in cool water, but for best results all hand knits should be hand washed (be sure to read the swatching instructions below)

The bamboo adds a teeny bit of luster, and if you live in a warm climate, or are allergic to wool, this yarn is a great choice. The yarn has no “boing” so it drapes really nicely.

Cotton yarns require a different dye process and type of dye than wool or silk based yarns. I try the best I can to get colorways similar to our protein based yarns, but sometimes cannot get as close as I would like. I usually e-mail pictures of cotton color ways dyed for the 1st time, if unsure if the customer might think they are not “close enough”. Colors do not come out quite as saturated on cotton as some of our other bases.

Kiri

Fiber Content: 20% Tussah Silk, 80% Superwash Merino
434yd/4oz
Fingering Weight
Care: For best results please hand washed

Kiri is a tussah silk and superwash merino fingering weight yarn. The 4-ply structure produces a smooth, round yarn with a soft but firm hand. The 20% Tussah Silk is well blended without any slubs. The silk adds a nice bit of luster without being shiney.  We love this yarn for knitting lace patterns because it has a beautiful drape, excellent stitch definition and it blocks well. It takes dye well and is a bit more muted than Pashmi or Verve.

Linen/ Silk Fingering

Limited Availability

Fiber Content: 650% Silk, 35% Linen 437yd/100g
Weight: Fingering
Care: handwash

The Linen/Silk blend dyes up unevenly with the silk bits dyeing darker giving a two toned, slightly heathered appearance. Dark colors will come out less saturated on this yarn since the linen portion doesn’t take the dye strongly. This yarn is naturally slightly slubby, giving it a wonderful natural texture. Unlike some linen yarns, this yarn is soft to the touch from the beginning and only becomes softer with use.
